The most economically important fruit fly species in Brazil belong to genera Anastrepha (more than hundred species recorded) and Ceratitis, represented by one unique introduced species – C. capitata.

Anastrepha species are widely distributed in Brazil, and at least one host species is known for almost half of them, however, only seven species are of agricultural importance.

C. capitata was introduced in 1901, and currently it is spread throughout the Brazilian territory.
